Chicago, Illinois (PRWEB) February 19, 2012

Malman Law announced Wednesday that the Chicago City Council approved a $ 1.75 million settlement with the family of a 13-year-old girl who died a decade ago after city paramedics allegedly botched her care during an asthma attack.

Paramedics in July 2002 incorrectly inserted a tube meant to help Arielle Starks breathe, said Jeffrey Levine, deputy corporation counsel.

Starks died at Advocate Trinity Hospital after an ambulance carrying her to the hospital collided with a car. Another ambulance picked up Starks and took her to the hospital.

Malman Law and a team of lawyers attempted to showcase the mistakes caused by the paramedics’ negligence. They successfully proved that the incorrectly inserted tube was meant to go through the esophagus that leads to the stomach, instead of through the trachea that leads to her lungs.

Initially the Starks case, number 03 L 8587, was represented by another prominent Chicago law firm, however, after the firm dropped the case, the Starks family, facing dismissal, turned to Malman Law. It was only after intense oral arguments that Malman Law convinced the Circuit Court of Cook County Illinois to allow Ms. Starks to proceed with the case.

“After I won the initial motion to dismiss by the City of Chicago, I assembled a team of lawyers and experts to prosecute the case resulting in an incredible settlement,” said Steven Malman, head of Malman Law.

If not for a series of “mistakes” made by the four paramedics who treated Starks on that fateful day, attorney Brian Murphy argued that the girl would be alive today.

Instead of proceeding to the hospital after determining that the driver of the other vehicle was not injured, the paramedics chose to follow, what Murphy called a “ridiculous general order” that states that, if a driver is in an accident involving property damage, he must remain on the scene.

As a result, Starks arrived at the hospital where she was pronounced dead 19 minutes after the accident, 25 minutes after being improperly treated and roughly 40 minutes after the initial call was placed to 911.

“In the United States, children do not die from asthma. It’s just that simple. I would categorically say there is no reason why this girl’s asthma should have killed her. She should have been back at school and back playing with her friends the next day,” Murphy said.

Experts at the trial testified that even though the tube was incorrectly inserted, Starks could have survived if the ambulance would have driven straight to the hospital.

“Because of all that, this girl died, and she did not need to die,” Murphy said.

John P. Howe, III, MD., President and CEO of Project HOPE visited China’s Sichuan Province immediately following the earthquake to begin planning for HOPE’s long-term relief efforts focusing on rehabilitative services for children.

Millwood, VA and Beijing, China (Vocus) May 12, 2009

On the one-year anniversary of the massive earthquake that devastated China’s Sichuan Province, Project HOPE , an international health education and humanitarian assistance organization, is officially launching the China Rehabilitation Medicine Program. The three-year program is collaboration between Project HOPE and China’s Ministry of Health, with support from several of Project HOPE’s corporate and foundation partners.

The purpose of the program is to increase both the accessibility and quality of rehabilitation services in the earthquake-affected areas of the Sichuan Province, as well as contribute to the improvement of rehabilitation services throughout China.

“Project HOPE is proud to launch this comprehensive rehabilitation program in cooperation with the Chinese government which will not only help those who need the care immediately, but will serve as a platform to improve overall rehabilitative care throughout China,” said John P. Howe, III, M.D., President and CEO of Project HOPE. “This program is an excellent example of HOPE’s commitment to provide long-term help following disaster situations, and at the same time, it helps those impacted build capacity to make their own health care systems stronger for the future.”

Project HOPE has been working in China for more than 25 years. Immediately following the massive, May 12, 2008 earthquake, several Project HOPE trained medical professionals in China were dispatched to the earthquake zone to help survivors. Project HOPE’s staff in China continued to work closely with in-country corporate offices, the Ministry of Health, the Sichuan Bureau of Health and local hospitals in the quake region to determine the medical needs and deliver over $ 1 million of medicines and supplies donated by HOPE’s corporate partners and foundations. The China Rehabilitation Medicine Program is an extension of Project HOPE’s long-term recovery efforts aimed at addressing the needs of the more than 70,000 injured, many of them children that require long-term, specialized rehabilitative care to properly heal from their earthquake related injuries.

Over the next three years, the China Rehabilitation Medicine Program will:

1. Broaden the scope and availability of community rehabilitation services in providing holistic rehabilitation services, including physical and occupational therapies and psychological support for earthquake affected children and adults, in selected communities in Dujiangyan city, an area significantly impacted by the earthquake.

2. Improve the capabilities of rehabilitation services in a selected city-level hospital to better support community-based rehabilitation services in Dujiangyan city.

3. Strengthen the rehabilitation service capacities at a selected provincial level hospital, which serves as the rehabilitation technical and training resource center in Sichuan Province.

4.    Standardize national rehabilitation training curricula and rehabilitation services guidelines for community and city-level rehabilitation services;

5. Create a supportive environment for scaling up a community-based rehabilitation service model and institutionalizing the rehabilitation service guidelines in the country.

Corporate Partners and Foundations supporting the program include:

Abbott Fund

Avon Foundation for Women

Baxter International Foundation

Bristol-Myers Squibb Foundation

Kelly Rogers, in the simplest sense, is not an ordinary mother. She does everything other mothers do. She cooks for the family, she does the laundry, she takes her children to school and she does chores at home. However, there is one factor that could totally negate the first sentence of this article. Rogers may be you average mother but there is something about her that goes beyond what the vision suggests. Apart from being a full time mom to her three children, she is also a manager in Oregon’s popular supermarket, Market of Choice. This market caters to various products especially organic and healthy supplements, foods, vitamins and other bio-products. Rogers is the Whole Health manager of this West Linn-based supermarket.

According to Kelly Rogers, though she is already a successful manager, she is infinitely a student of life and believes that life is a series of courses and educational pieces that could help your life improve for the better. She believes that education does not start and stop insides the confines of a class room. Rather, life itself is a class room and everyone in it are all students, whether they choose to be or not. To continue learning, she keeps an open eye to everything that’s latest and talked about so that she can apply it to her work place. In that case, being a health and nutrition savvy, she is also involved in processing and distributing various health foods and products that are sold at market of Choice.

As a good manager of the store, Kelly Rogers make sure that the customers of the grocery store are always supplied with plenty of choices on the products they want to buy. For her, variety is the main key to make clients truly satisfies since they will have a lot of things to choose from. So whether it is on hygienic products such as soap, lotion, shampoo, facial creams and others, she makes sure that there is a wide variety. With this, the Whole Health department has a grand total of seventy-five suppliers of different products.

Kelly Rogers believes that customer service is truly her niche. She does not believe that as a manager, it is her prime duty to talk to them and pitch to them to convince them to buy an item. Because for her, it is truly bliss whenever she can attend and find solutions to all client concerns no matter how minute they are.

Women can live more active lifestyles after non-invasive vaginal prolapse surgery.

(PRWEB) February 16, 2012

A Cincinnati surgeon wants to lift the veil on the image of the sedate, Mona Lisa-like mother or grandmother who sits in a chair and smiles as life goes on around her.

Maybe she’s not physically active because she has a pelvic floor disorder.

Dr. Steven D. Kleeman, M.D., of Cincinnati Urogynecology Associates (CUA) is an expert and surgeon for women’s pelvic disorders. He says the serene smiles of our mothers may be attempts to mask discomfort.

Kleeman is one of the nation’s Top 10 busiest surgeons performing robotic surgery for vaginal surgery, according to Intuitive Surgical, Inc. of Sunnyvale, Calif., which monitors use of its robotic surgical systems.

Kleeman uses Good Samaritan Hospital’s state-of-the-art, da Vinci system to help women in the 200-mile, four-state region of Ohio, Kentucky, Indiana and West Virginia. He has offices in Clifton and West Chester, Ohio.

“While some women begin having incontinence or pelvic floor discomfort as early as their 20s, our typical patient is an active woman in her 40s who has given birth to two or three children and begins to feel pressure or fullness, or as if something is ‘falling’ in the vaginal area,” said Kleeman.

“She may experience pelvic pressure or lower back pain which gets better when she lies down. This kind of discomfort stops her from doing things she would normally want to do, and she typically gives up sports or things she enjoys because activity makes her uncomfortable.”

Women who feel a sense of pelvic pressure or fullness may be experiencing what is called vaginal prolapse—the equivalent of a vaginal hernia.

Up to 65 percent of women nationally suffer from some form of incontinence, overactive bladder, sexual dysfunction or pelvic organ prolapse, with the majority of problems arising in women who have given birth multiple times.

Kleeman offers physical therapy treatment options for patients with minor problems and performs minimally-invasive gynecological surgery for women with prolapse—enabling them to regain comfort and the confidence to lead physically-active lives.

Physicians at CUA specialize in urogynecology and pelvic reconstructive surgery, a branch of gynecology focused on treating bladder and pelvic floor disorders.

Kleeman loves helping women gain their physical independence back, but often wonders why women wait to address their discomfort. The average time his patients tend to suffer from onset of symptoms to evaluation is seven years— a long time when women are in the prime years of their lives.

“Incontinence and prolapse really disrupt a woman’s quality of life,” said Kleeman. “I’m always gratified to talk to patients who lost the ability to do the things they enjoy, and we were able to give that back to them. Women feel excited and empowered after they get relief from their symptoms. Many women are surprised to learn that relief can come from minimally-invasive surgery.”

The surgery consists of several small incisions, and patients typically go home the next day. Most patients can drive within a week. This is a great contrast to the traditional approach to abdominal prolapse surgery, where the surgeon makes a 6- to 8-inch incision and a patient remains in the hospital for three days.

Kleeman has been performing robotic surgery using the da Vinci system since 2003. “A lot of surgeons do prolapse surgery, but most of them still perform it in the traditional fashion,” he said.

“I’m one of the few surgeons in the greater Cincinnati region who perform vaginal prolapse surgery that is robotic-assisted, which means the surgery goes faster, better– and is becoming more popular.”

He also travels to third-world countries annually to perform surgeries on women who cannot afford it through Light of the World Charities. This past February, he performed gynecological surgeries on 43 women in Honduras.

Kleeman wants women to know there is no need to suffer in silence any longer. “We have the technology available and the skill to dramatically improve women’s lives.”

Aliso Viejo, CA (PRWEB) June 07, 2011

William Dyer, vice president and cofounder of HCP National, announced today that a new California medical malpractice insurance product and existing New York medical malpractice insurance products for surgeons and OB/GYNs seeking insurance in those states. This new malpractice insurance company is an A+ rated standard insurer, which is new to California; it can be the most competitively priced for invasive specialties groups and solos (OBs, cosmetic surgeons, family practitioners and general surgeons). There are currently four admitted companies offering malpractice insurance in California: The Doctor’s Company, Medical Protective, NORCAL Mutual and PULIC. The new insurer will be the fifth admitted malpractice insurer for Californian Physicians.

Dyer stated, “It is always favorable to have more choices for Californian physicians in the standard market. Reimbursements continue to be low for physicians, and the economic pressures on California physicians are the greatest they have ever been. They need to save money on their medical malpractice insurance and all other areas of expense. The more malpractice insurance capacity, or competition, there is for the physician’s malpractice business the lower the pricing will be. Our company’s mission since 1994 has been to save physicians money on their medical malpractice insurance, and this new insurer advances that mission.”

HCP National, “The Healthcare Industry’s Insurance Broker,” has been providing solo medical malpractice insurance, group malpractice insurance, affordable stand-alone tail malpractice insurance, E&O and D&O, Managed Care Stop Loss and Benefits for over seventeen years. HCP provides medical malpractice insurance in California as well as New York.

HCP also offers workers compensation and property casualty insurance. HCP National has offices dealing with medical malpractice insurance in California Riverside and Aliso Viejo and in, New York, Manhattan.

Perth Amboy, New Jersey (PRWEB) February 12, 2012

Raritan Bay Medical Center (RBMC), a community hospital with locations in Old Bridge and Perth Amboy, NJ, has joined select hospitals around the nation that are employing nurse navigators to assist patients and coordinate their care. As healthcare continues to evolve in its complexity, and with the myriad of physician specialists and treatment options available, nurse navigators can play an important role in helping patients make informed medical decisions, understand treatment and by providing emotional support. As suggested in their title, nurse navigators guide patients and their families through their healthcare experience at RBMC, providing an overview of services and facility locations, explaining diagnosis’s, scheduling visits, providing advice and following up to support patients after they leave the medical center. The goals of the nurse navigator coincide with RBMC’s national Magnet nursing status and the Patient Family Centered Care Model followed by the medical center.

RBMC’s specialty services, the Human Motion Institute (HMI), Institute for Weight Loss and Center for Women currently employ nurse navigators who share common goals but have unique perspectives derived from their specialties. As navigator for HMI, a program providing comprehensive musculoskeletal healthcare, Clare Schuld, RN, BSN, ONC, is focused on coordinating care for patients during initial referral from acute injury or elective surgery through postoperative physical therapy and return to normal function. She works in cooperation with physicians and a multidisciplinary team to schedule patient appointments, provide preoperative education and community outreach and serve as a liaison between patients and the entire HMI healthcare team. “Our patients are taught how to prepare for surgery, what they can expect and the daily goals they need to accomplish throughout their entire surgical stay to help ensure the best clinical outcomes,” says Clare. “Also important, I track and review patient outcomes with our specialized teams to reduce complication rates and enhance care.”

Center for Women navigator Melissa Scholz’s, RN, BSN, BHN, CBPN-IC, role encompasses more of a preventative and educational aspect in line with the Center’s focus on women’s specific healthcare needs and goal of early diagnosis of cancer. She provides comprehensive and holistic care to patients receiving their first mammogram to those diagnosed with breast cancer. During treatment Scholz ensures patient’s needs are being met from diagnosis to survivorship; providing education, support, resources and referrals and advocacy services to patients and their families. “I believe in reducing fear and anxiety by providing empowerment through education, providing a non-judgmental ear to listen and shoulder to cry on for support, and overall just helping people get through a difficult time as life is hard enough without cancer or a cancer scare,” says Melissa. “The best part of my job is interacting with patients on a personal level and guiding them to the other side of a difficult journey.” Additionally, she provides community education and promotes good breast health practices and breast cancer awareness to people of all ages and cultures within the community.

Maureen Ali, RN, BSN, works to customize services as part of the Institute for Weight Loss, which encompasses a wide range of treatment options from state-of-the-art minimally invasive surgical (called bariatric) weight loss options to non-surgical medical weight loss. Ali explains the benefits and concerns associated with each bariatric surgical option as well as conservative options and coordinates nutrition education, lifestyle counseling and ongoing support with the Institute’s multidisciplinary team. “No matter which option ends up being right for the patient, my ultimate goal is to ensure their good health and healthy weight loss,” says Maureen. “We all work to create a personalized treatment program for our patients, combining bariatric or medical intervention with a lifetime commitment to healthy eating, exercise and follow-up care and support.” She also follows strict guidelines to ensure that bariatric options are explored with patients only when appropriate.

The nurse navigators have not only had a profound positive effect coordinating care across the medical center’s healthcare continuum and linking staff, but also have been a great source of satisfaction with patients and their families during their stay or experience at RBMC.

About Raritan Bay Medical Center (RBMC)

A New Jersey state-designated primary stroke center, RBMC is a recipient of the American Stroke Association Get with the GuidelinesSM – Stroke Silver Performance Achievement Award, recognizing the medical center’s success in implementing a high standard of stroke care and the American Heart Association Get with the GuidelinesSM – Heart Failure Gold Performance Achievement Award, recognizing the optimal care of heart failure patients.

RBMC, with locations in Old Bridge and Perth Amboy, is also one of less than two percent of hospitals nationally to achieve re-designation as a Magnet Hospital, recognizing nursing excellence, and is a three time recipient of the New Jersey Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield patient care quality award.

Licensed for 501 beds with a medical staff of more than 500, RBMC provides medical-surgical, maternity, pediatric, diagnostic imaging, laboratory and general and critical care, as well as adult behavioral health, emergency and interventional cardiac and same day surgery services. A leader in cardiovascular care, RBMC is one of only ten New Jersey hospitals chosen to participate in a national Johns Hopkins University Medical Center demonstration project studying the benefits of providing elective angioplasty in hospitals without onsite cardiac surgery.

The hospital’s Human Motion Institute is devoted to providing superior outcomes and patient satisfaction in all areas of musculoskeletal treatment, and its new Institute for Weight Loss at Old Bridge provides individualized medical and surgical weight loss options. RBMC has several other specialty services including the Center for Wound Healing, Center for Sleep Medicine, Center for Women and Pulmonary Rehabilitation and Physical Therapy programs. RBMC’s Medical Pavilion at Woodbridge provides urgent care services without an appointment 365 days a year, an obstetrics and gynecology physician practice and outpatient physical therapy services.

The medical center is a major clinical affiliate of UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and a member of the Robert Wood Johnson Health Network. For more information about services, visit http://www.rbmc.org. For a free physician referral call 1-800-DOCTORS.
